Guelph, ON, May 15, 2018—Bullfrog Power, Canada’s leading green energy provider, is pleased to announce Mirexus Biotechnologies, a biomaterials company based in Guelph, is now reducing its energy-related emissions footprint through a new commitment to renewable energy. The organization is choosing 100 per cent renewable electricity and green natural gas for its factory, lab and office in Guelph where it produces a sustainable nanomaterial used in cosmetic, nutraceutical and biomedical products.

“At Mirexus, our commitment to sustainability runs through all aspects of our business,” says Phil Whiting, President and CEO, Mirexus. “Our main raw material is a renewable plant resource, our manufacturing process is based on water and uses no chemicals, and our main by-product can be used as agricultural food. And now, through our partnership with Bullfrog Power, our commitment includes 100 per cent clean, renewable energy for our factory, lab and office.”

Through the agreement, Bullfrog Power injects green electricity and green natural gas into the grid and pipeline respectively to match the amount of conventional power and natural gas Mirexus’ factory, lab and office use. Across Canada, Bullfrog’s green electricity comes from a blend of wind and low-impact hydro power sourced from new Canadian renewable energy facilities. Sourced from a methane-capture project situated on one of Canada’s landfills, Bullfrog’s green natural gas is a climate-friendly alternative to conventional, polluting natural gas. Through innovative technology, biogas is captured, cleaned up, and injected into the national natural gas pipeline, displacing fossil fuel-based gas and reducing CO2 emissions into the atmosphere.

Mirexus will also be supporting the development of community-based green energy projects as Bullfrog uses its customers’ support to provide critical funding to these projects, which include solar panels on schools and renewable installations with Indigenous communities.

In addition to choosing renewable energy, Mirexus implements a number of other environmental programs, including:

• Being an early adopter of sustainable lab practices. In partnership with GreenCentre, Mirexus is working towards Green Lab Certification by training lab users in sustainable behaviors and implementing measures to reduce energy consumption, reduce waste and promote recycling.
• Designing its new office, production and lab facilities with a focus on energy efficiency, boasting highly efficient LED lighting and a state-of-the-art HVAC system with VAV fume hoods.
• Establishing its own Social and Environmental Responsibility Committee, which regularly organizes environmental events, e.g. volunteer park clean-ups.
