Five ways Moksha Yoga is working toward a greener planet

With 65 studios across the country, Moksha Yoga educates thousands Canadians each year on the many health benefits of practicing yoga, such as stress relief, increased flexibility and strengthened muscles. But did you know that Moksha Yoga studios across Canada are going above and beyond to make sure their practices—and spaces—are as green as possible?

Moksha Yoga co-founders Ted Grand and Jessica Robertson shared the top five ways that Moksha Yoga is working toward a greener planet:

  1. Being green is built into Moksha’s philosophy: Moksha Yoga was established with a commitment to seven philosophical pillars—where the third pillar is Live Green. Each pillar serves as a guide for all decisions they make as a community and business. Live Green means that their studios, and students, are encouraged to reduce the impact they have on this planet.
  2. It’s light on its feet: Each studio is built to have the lightest footprint possible. This means they use non-toxic paints, sustainably harvested or recycled flooring, energy efficient appliances, eco-friendly cleaning products and more.
  3. It’s an evolving organism: Many studios want to push the envelope and be as green as they can be. Moksha Yoga studios encourage each other to be better and do better by incorporating innovative eco-friendly practices, like using “hempcrete” to build their walls, insulating their studios with recycled jeans, growing living walls, and incorporating upcycled products into their builds.
  4. Supporting green energy: Moksha Yoga studios across Canada have been committed to supporting green energy with Bullfrog Power since 2008. Through this partnership, Moksha Yoga has reduced its carbon emissions by 4,589 tonnes—that’s the equivalent of diverting more than 1,455 tonnes of waste from landfill!
  5. Encouraging eco-yogis: Many studios inspire their students to live the green life by offering incentives if they walk or bike to the studio, ditch their plastic water bottles in favour of re-useable ones, sign up for classes online to save paper at the studio, and more.

Recently, Moksha Yoga and Bullfrog Power encouraged yogis to share their best wind turbine-inspired yoga poses on Instagram to increase awareness of the importance of supporting clean, pollution-free energy! Here are some of our favourites:
