Edmonton, AB—For Earth Hour (Saturday, March 24), Bullfrog Power, Canada’s leading green energy provider, and Southgate Centre are teaming up to provide enough renewable energy to bullfrogpower every home in Edmonton for one hour. Through the agreement, Southgate Centre will purchase 419 MWh of green electricity from Bullfrog Power—equivalent to what 216,070 households in Edmonton would use in one hour.[1]

“#Connect2Earth is Earth Hour’s theme this year, so we’ve connected with Bullfrog Power on a renewable energy commitment that we hope will spark new conversations about the actions we can all take on climate change,” said Vivian Wagner, General Manager, Southgate Centre. “From our waste diversion efforts to being the first shopping centre in Edmonton with EV charging stations, Southgate is making sustainability in our community a priority.”

Southgate Centre also bullfrogpowers 35 per cent of the shopping centre’s common areas with green electricity. That means that Bullfrog Power’s generators put clean, pollution-free electricity onto the grid to match the amount of conventional power its bullfrogpowered spaces use. Across Canada, Bullfrog Power’s green electricity comes from a blend of wind and low-impact hydro power sourced from new Canadian renewable energy facilities.

“Earth Hour gives us the opportunity to celebrate the positive environmental impact our partnership with Southgate Centre is having year-round,” said Anthony Santilli, VP Sales and Marketing, Bullfrog Power. “Through its green energy commitment with Bullfrog, Southgate Centre is supporting renewable energy and the development of new community-based renewable energy projects across Canada.”

Earth Hour is WWF’s global environmental movement. Born in Sydney in 2007, Earth Hour has grown to become the world’s largest grassroots movement for the environment, inspiring individuals, communities, businesses and organizations in more than 170 countries and territories to take tangible climate action for over a decade. The movement recognizes the role of individuals in changing climate change and harnesses the collective power of its millions of supporters to shine a light on climate action.

“Wildlife loss is real, it’s widespread in Canada and around the world, it’s happening now and it affects all of us. Declining wildlife populations rely on the same things people need to thrive: Safe places to go about their lives, plenty of food and abundant healthy water. When you turn out your lights this Earth Hour, home by home, street by street, community by community, you’re showing that together we need to take the necessary steps to reverse the decline of wildlife,” says Megan Leslie, President and CEO, WWF-Canada.

In addition to its Earth Hour activities and choosing Bullfrog Power’s green energy, Southgate Centre’s sustainability initiatives include:

  • An evolving waste diversion program that uses progressive environmental solutions to divert approximately 69 per cent of waste produced at Southgate Centre;
  • Three water bottle fill stations in the centre to reduce the use of plastic bottles; and
  • Eight Tesla Supercharging stations now available at the first shopping centre in Edmonton with EV charging stations.
