Halifax, N.S.—As part of this year’s Earth Hour celebrations (Saturday, March 24 at 8:30 pm), Bullfrog Power, Canada’s leading green energy provider, is working with Mic Mac Mall to extend its renewable energy commitment to the Halifax area. For Earth Hour 2018, Mic Mac Mall will purchase 134 MWh of green electricity from Bullfrog Power—equivalent to what 137,320 households in the Halifax area would use in one hour.[1]

“Earth Hour 2018’s theme is #Connect2Earth. At Mic Mac Mall we want to connect our community to the environmental issues that matter by raising awareness about Earth Hour and supporting renewable alternatives,” said Tamitha Oakley, General Manager, Mic Mac Mall. “By partnering with Bullfrog Power this Earth Hour, Mic Mac Mall is making an additional renewable energy commitment that shows how we can all take action on climate change.”

Mic Mac Mall also bullfrogpowers 50 per cent of the mall’s common areas with green electricity every year throughout the year. That means that Bullfrog Power’s generators put clean, pollution-free electricity onto the grid to match the amount of conventional power used by 50 per cent of Mic Mac Mall’s common areas. Across Canada, Bullfrog Power’s green electricity comes from a blend of wind and low-impact hydro power sourced from new Canadian renewable energy facilities.

“Mic Mac Mall’s Earth Hour initiative means that they are bullfrogpowering the equivalent of every Halifax area household for Earth Hour—and that is in addition to supporting green electricity all year,” said Anthony Santilli, VP Sales and Marketing, Bullfrog Power. “By choosing Bullfrog Power’s green electricity, Mic Mac Mall is reducing its environmental impact and supporting the development of new community-based green energy projects across the country.”

Earth Hour is WWF’s global environmental movement. Born in Sydney in 2007, Earth Hour has grown to become the world’s largest grassroots movement for the environment, inspiring individuals, communities, businesses and organizations in more than 170 countries and territories to take tangible climate action for over a decade. The movement recognizes the role of individuals in changing climate change and harnesses the collective power of its millions of supporters to shine a light on climate action.

“Wildlife loss is real, it’s widespread in Canada and around the world, it’s happening now and it affects all of us. Declining wildlife populations rely on the same things people need to thrive: Safe places to go about their lives, plenty of food and abundant healthy water. When you turn out your lights this Earth Hour, home by home, street by street, community by community, you’re showing that together we need to take the necessary steps to reverse the decline of wildlife,” says Megan Leslie, President and CEO, WWF-Canada.

Beyond Earth Hour, Mic Mac Mall’s sustainability initiatives include being proudly BOMA Platinum Certified since 2015 and implementing Sort It Out, a program that:

  • ensures food court waste is properly separated and disposed;
  • encourages customers to bring their trays to the Food Court sorting station, where service staff collect and separate the waste according to City of Halifax Waste Management guidelines;
  • significantly increases the amount of organics and recycles diverted from landfill sites; and
  • has achieved a 90.2 per cent waste diversion rate at Mic Mac Mall Food Court.
