Bullfrog Power named Green Energy Title Sponsor of Queen’s Solar Design Team’s student-built autonomous house project

Tuesday November 15, 2016

Kingston, ON—Today, Bullfrog Power, Canada’s leading green energy provider, and the Queen’s Solar Design Team are announcing a new partnership. Bullfrog Power is being named the project’s Green Energy Title Sponsor as part of a contribution to the funding for the Queen’s Solar Education Centre (QSEC), an autonomous house project intended to be a testing ground for new sustainable technologies. The house is being built by a multidisciplinary team of Queen’s students on the Queen’s Solar Design Team with help from Queen’s University’s Solar Calorimetry Lab.

The QSEC will be a house that will provide heating, water, and shelter for its residents without being connected to municipal electricity or water supplies. It will accomplish this through a 1.9 kW solar array, rain water catchment and filtration system, and other technologies. In addition, an innovative high-efficiency heating system will be installed, which will greatly reduce the power requirements for heating the home. In Canada, home heating typically makes up 63 per cent of residential power usage.

While under construction, the QSEC has hosted tours and workshops for hundreds of community members as well as children from local schools and summer camps. The goal of the project is to educate and empower current and future homeowners to change their own homes to be more sustainable.

Katie Yang, Business Manager for the Queen’s Solar Design Team, says, “We are thrilled to be partnering with Bullfrog Power. There is a strong alignment between our organizations, in that we are both dedicated to increasing the awareness and use of renewable technologies.”

“Bullfrog Power and QSEC are helping to educate Canadians through examples of the tools we need to live a greener life and by finding ways to reduce the environmental impact of our homes,” says Ron Seftel, CEO, Bullfrog Power. “Thanks to bullfrogpowered individuals and organizations across Canada, Bullfrog Power is able to support progressive, education-focused projects like the QSEC autonomous house.”
