VersaCold: How green energy is working for the supply chain industry

Thursday March 24, 2016

Sustainability is increasingly a watchword for the supply chain and cold storage industries. For VersaCold Logistics Services, Canada’s largest supply chain company focused exclusively on the handling of temperature sensitive products, addressing energy use is a core part of its sustainability strategy.

Through its commitment to continuously improving sustainability measures to achieve greater environmental responsibility, VersaCold had already accomplished a lot to make its business greener, including:

  • Retrofitting existing facilities with high-efficiency lighting, roofing and charging systems for materials handling equipment
  • Installing rainwater and defrost condensation collection systems and reduced flow faucets
  • Implementing comprehensive recycling programs (cardboard, paper, stretch wrap, refrigeration oil, steel and other metals, fork lift batteries, printer cartridges and construction debris)
  • Expanding use of more efficient and environmentally-friendly refrigerants, such as ammonia
  • Replacing standard efficiency motors with premium efficiency motors (and variable frequency drives, where appropriate)
  • Educating engineering teams and employees on ways to reduce energy consumption at their sites and giving them advanced tools, such as near-real time monitoring, to keep consumption under control

VersaCold recently turned to Bullfrog Power to further green its energy use. Today, VersaCold chooses Bullfrog Power’s green electricity and green natural gas products for its Vancouver head office.

How does it work? Essentially, Bullfrog Power ensures that green electricity and green natural gas are put onto the energy systems to match the amount of conventional electricity and natural gas VersaCold’s head office uses. By choosing Bullfrog Power’s green energy, VersaCold is reducing the CO2 emissions footprint of its head office. And, through Bullfrog Power, the company is also supporting the development of new renewable energy projects across Canada.
