Oakville, ON, July 22, 2015—The 2015 RBC Canadian Open, taking place at Glen Abbey Golf Club in Oakville, Ontario, from July 20 to 26, will be reducing its environmental impact with Bullfrog Power’s green electricity and green natural gas. The tournament at Glen Abbey, a certified Audobon Cooperative Sanctuary golf course since 2004, will be carbon neutral by combining offsets for vehicles and diesel generators with Bullfrog Power’s green energy.
“RBC is proud of our work with Golf Canada and our other event partners to ensure that the RBC Canadian Open continues to be a positive example of progressive best practices helping to reduce the event’s environmental impacts,” says Sandra Odendahl, Director, Corporate Sustainability, RBC.
Through the partnership, Bullfrog Power’s generators put green electricity onto the grid to match the amount of power used at Glen Abbey for the duration of the RBC Canadian Open. Across Canada, Bullfrog Power’s green electricity comes from a blend of wind and low-impact hydro power sourced from new Canadian renewable energy facilities, with 50 per cent coming from this region.
“Alongside Bullfrog Power’s green energy, the 2015 RBC Canadian Open has a comprehensive sustainability plan,” said Brent McLaughlin, Tournament Director for the RBC Canadian Open. “Together with our partners at RBC, we are diverting waste from landfill through responsible food packaging, recycling and organics collection, and running two zero waste sorting stations. Low emissions transportation options are being encouraged through bicycle parking and EV vehicle use on site to reduce the tournament’s environmental impact.”
In addition, Bullfrog Power’s generators will put green natural gas onto the national pipeline system to match the amount of natural gas used at the 2015 RBC Canadian Open. Sourced from a unique, ground-breaking methane-capture project situated on one of Canada’s landfills, Bullfrog’s green natural gas is a climate-friendly alternative to conventional, polluting natural gas. Through this innovative technology, biogas is captured, cleaned up, and put onto the national natural gas pipeline, displacing fossil fuel-based gas and reducing CO2 emissions into the atmosphere.
“2015 marks Bullfrog Power’s tenth anniversary and RBC, as one of our first supporters, continues to show leadership in sustainable event sponsorship,” said Anthony Santilli, Vice President, Sales and Marketing, Bullfrog Power. “Choosing green energy for the 2015 RBC Canadian Open expands on the action RBC is already taking for the environment by bullfrogpowering its internal events as well as its Canadian network of ATMs and in-branch digital displays with green electricity.”
