Edmonton—For this year’s Earth Hour (Saturday, March 25), Bullfrog Power, Canada’s leading green energy provider, and Southgate Centre are teaming up to provide enough renewable energy to bullfrogpower every home in Edmonton for one hour. Through the agreement, Southgate will purchase 445 MWh of green electricity from Bullfrog Power—equivalent to what 450,785 homes in Edmonton would use in one hour.[1] Southgate is one of seven Ivanhoé Cambridge shopping centres participating in Earth Hour events with Bullfrog Power. Together, they are bullfrogpowering the equivalent of more than 1.9 million households across Canada during Earth Hour.

“Earth Hour is an important time to recognize the role we can all play in making our communities greener. Through our partnership with Bullfrog Power, the equivalent of every household in Edmonton will have green electricity—that’s more than 450,000 homes,” said Vivian Wagner, General Manager, Southgate Centre.

Southgate also bullfrogpowers 35 per cent of the shopping centre’s common areas with green electricity. That means that Bullfrog Power’s generators put clean, pollution-free electricity onto the grid to match the amount of conventional power used by 35 per cent of Southgate’s common areas. Across Canada, Bullfrog Power’s green electricity comes from a blend of wind and low-impact hydro power sourced from new Canadian renewable energy facilities.

“Earth Hour is about communities coming together for our environment,” said Anthony Santilli, VP Sales and Marketing, Bullfrog Power. “This year, as a result of our initiative with Southgate, we’re participating in an inspiring show of support for renewable energy in Canada and meaningful action on climate change.”

Earth Hour is WWF’s global environmental movement. Born in Sydney in 2007, Earth Hour has grown to become the world’s largest grassroots movement for the environment, inspiring individuals, communities, businesses and organizations in more than 170 countries and territories to take tangible climate action for over a decade. The movement recognizes the role of individuals in changing climate change and harnesses the collective power of its millions of supporters to shine a light on climate action.

“Earth Hour is meant to spark meaningful changes to tackle climate change, including in our own homes,” says David Miller, President and CEO, WWF-Canada. “It’s an opportunity to focus on solutions and making the transition to renewable energy is something we must and can do.”

In addition to Earth Hour activities and choosing Bullfrog Power’s green energy, Southgate’s sustainability initiatives include:

  • Southgate Recycles, an environmental program that has achieved a waste diversion rate of 64 per cent;
  • EV charging stations that made Southgate the first shopping centre in Edmonton to provide this service for its patrons; and
  • Water bottle fill stations that reduce plastic water bottle usage by promoting re-usable containers.
