On the Green: RBC bullfrogpowers® the 2014 RBC Canadian Open

RBC and Golf Canada choose 100 per cent green natural gas from Bullfrog Power® to help make the 2014 RBC Canadian Open a carbon neutral event

Île-Bizard, QC—Bullfrog Power, Canada’s leading green energy provider, announced today that RBC and Golf Canada will bullfrogpower the 2014 RBC Canadian Open with 100 per cent green natural gas. Canada’s National Open Championship is set to take place at The Royal Montreal Golf Club, July 21 to 27, 2014, in Île-Bizard, Quebec.

“RBC is proud of our work with Golf Canada and our other event partners to ensure that the RBC Canadian Open continues to be a positive example of best practices to reduce the event’s environmental impacts,” says Sandra Odendahl, Director, Corporate Sustainability, RBC.

In addition to purchasing green natural gas for the event, RBC will make all event operations carbon neutral through the purchase and retirement of high quality carbon offsets, neutralizing GHG emissions associated with the use of diesel generators and event vehicles (i.e. shuttle buses and courtesy vehicles).

“We are committed to making the 2014 RBC Canadian Open a green event,” said Bill Paul, Tournament Director for the RBC Canadian Open.  “Together with our partners at RBC, we are reducing the Open’s overall environmental impact by making it carbon neutral, providing patrons with sustainable transportation options and diverting waste from landill through a comprehensive waste management program.”

In 2005, RBC became the first bank to support clean energy through a renewable energy agreement with Bullfrog Power. Since then, RBC has continued to expand its commitment to renewable energy and bullfrogpowers its entire Canadian network of ATMs and in-branch digital displays with green electricity.

“The 2014 RBC Canadian Open is a demonstration of RBC continually refining its environmentally-focused best practices and that it is why RBC is increasingly a leader in sustainable event sponsorship,” said Shaun Lewis, Vice President, Sales, Bullfrog Power. “By choosing green natural gas for the 2014 RBC Canadian Open, RBC is helping to educate Canadians about the solutions available to all of us to take action on climate change.”

Through the agreement, Bullfrog Power’s generators put green natural gas onto the national pipeline system to match the amount used at the 2014 RBC Canadian Open. Bullfrog’s green natural gas is a climate-friendly alternative to conventional, polluting natural gas, and is sourced from the Rive-Nord green natural gas facility in Quebec, a unique, ground-breaking methane-capture project. Through this innovative technology, biogas is captured, cleaned up, and put onto the national natural gas pipeline, displacing fossil-fuel based gas and reducing CO2 emissions into the atmosphere.
