Bullfrog Power Celebrates 10 Years of Advancing Green Energy in Canada

Monday September 28, 2015

Toronto—Today, Bullfrog Power, Canada’s leading green energy provider, is marking a decade of advancing renewable energy in Canada. The company, which in 2005 brought Canadians a green energy choice, has seen the widespread adoption of clean, renewable energy by more than 10,000 homes and 1,200 businesses across the country. The bullfrogpowered community includes Canadians from every walk of life and businesses from the smallest home-based entrepreneurs to corporate leaders, including RBC, a customer since Bullfrog’s original 2005 launch. Also joining Bullfrog’s community on its anniversary are some of its newest partners, including Canadian Blood Services and Peavey Mart, who are both announcing new commitments to green energy with Bullfrog Power.

“Bullfrog Power launched with the vision of bringing about a renewably powered future,” said Ron Seftel, CEO, Bullfrog Power. “We’re inspired by the response of Canadians in embracing green energy and taking action on climate change and air pollution. Even with the progress we’ve made, however, we have much more work to do. Canada still relies on polluting forms of energy, such as coal, oil, gas, and nuclear for a large percentage of our energy needs. As such, we are now focusing on the road ahead and how we can continue our important work to encourage more widespread adoption of renewable energy.”

When an individual or business chooses Bullfrog Power’s green energy, Bullfrog ensures that the energy put on the grid on their behalf is from clean, renewable sources. Since 2005, Bullfrog Power’s customers have been putting more green energy onto the Canada energy systems and funding new projects across Canada.

A different kind of company, Bullfrog Power – one of the first Canadian B Corporations – has long exemplified the social enterprise, a model where businesses act as a catalyst for social change. B Corporations are required to adhere to the highest standards of social and environmental performance, transparency and accountability.

From coast to coast, the impact of the bullfrogpowered community has been significant:

  • 10,000 individuals and 1,200 business are now bullfrogpowered;
  • 3 million megawatt hours of green electricity on the grid;
  • 4 million gigajoules of green natural gas on the national pipeline system;
  • 60 Canadian green energy projects funded, from ZooShare – North America’s first zoo-biogas plant – to partnerships with First Nations, including a solar project with the Lutsel K’e Dene First Nation in the Northwest Territories;
  • 1 million tonnes of carbon dioxide displaced from the environment; and
  • the launch of innovative new offerings, including green natural gas and green fuel.

These results were only achievable with the strong support of Bullfrog Power’s corporate partners. That is why Bullfrog Power is especially proud to recognize RBC as a launch partner that has been supporting renewable energy in Canada for a full decade. RBC chooses clean, pollution-free electricity for all of its Canadian ATMs and in-branch digital displays as well as all of its internal and major events, placing it in the top ten businesses in Canada choosing green energy with Bullfrog Power. The RBC Environmental Blueprint details RBC’s commitment to environmental sustainability.

“RBC is proud that we were the first major financial institution in Canada to partner with Bullfrog Power 10 years ago – and of the significant emissions reductions we continue to accomplish together,” said Lawrence Spicer, Vice President, Channel Strategy, RBC. “We’re pleased to be helping develop renewable energy in Canada through this partnership and our growing financing activities in the sector.”
