Bullfrog Power to act as the Official Education Sponsor for biogas plant at the Toronto Zoo

Toronto—Bullfrog Power, Canada’s 100 per cent green energy provider, and ZooShare Biogas Co-operative, a non-profit renewable energy co-operative, are proud to announce a new partnership. Bullfrog Power is the Official Education Sponsor of ZooShare’s first project, a 500 kW biogas plant located at and in association with the Toronto Zoo.

The project will be the first co-operatively owned biogas facility in Canada and is expected to be operational at the end of 2014. The facility will turn the Zoo’s manure output and food waste from local grocery stores into electricity, heat, and fertilizer. In so doing, the facility will save more than 12,000 tonnes of GHG emissions from entering the environment.

“ZooShare is the kind of innovative green energy solution with the power to inspire that our Bullfrog Builds program was created to support,” said Ron Seftel, Senior Vice President, Operations, Bullfrog Power. “Through Bullfrog Builds, we’re helping the development of new renewable energy projects across Canada and showing people what’s possible in their communities.”

Bullfrog Powerthrough its Bullfrog Builds Renewable Accelerator Programis a ZooShare Founder’s Club investor. In addition, Bullfrog will act as the project’s Official Education Sponsor. As the education sponsor, Bullfrog Power will provide educational materials and help educate visitors to the Toronto Zoo about this unique form of renewable energy generation.

“ZooShare started in late 2010 with the idea that a group of individuals could invest in a local project to turn manure and locally produced organic waste into usable energy, while earning above average returns and creating positive environmental change,” said Daniel Bida, Executive Director, ZooShare Biogas Co-operative. “We are proud to be working with Bullfrog Power to educate the public about the important role biogas can play in reducing the environmental impact of our energy.”

To help finance the project, ZooShare Community Bonds (paying 7% annual returns over 7 years) are now being offered to Ontarians; creating an opportunity to improve the local environment, support the Zoo and participate in the growth and development of biogas in Ontario.
