Halifax, Nova Scotia, October 22, 2018—Bullfrog Power, Canada’s leading green energy provider, is pleased to announce Atlantic Central, the trade association for credit unions in Atlantic Canada, is choosing 100 per cent renewable electricity for its entire operations, which includes offices in Halifax, N.S., Charlottetown, P.E.I., and Riverview, N.B. By supporting green energy with Bullfrog Power, Atlantic Central is reducing its environmental footprint and supporting the development of community-based renewable energy projects in the Atlantic region and across Canada.

“The credit union system, by its very nature, supports local communities and the people who live in them. We are strong advocates for environmental sustainability and choosing to invest in renewable energy for our organization provides us with a unique opportunity to contribute to a healthier environment, while at the same time supporting the local economies,” says Michael Leonard, President and Chief Executive Officer, Atlantic Central. “We are encouraging more credit unions to consider renewable energy as an easy but important way to both support their communities and the environment.”

Through the agreement, Bullfrog Power injects 100 per cent green electricity into the grid to match the amount of conventional power Atlantic Central’s locations use. Bullfrog’s green electricity comes from a blend of wind and low-impact hydro power sourced from new Canadian renewable energy facilities. In Atlantic Canada, Bullfrog’s sources include the Ellershouse Wind Farm in Nova Scotia, and the West Cape Wind Farm in Prince Edward Island.

With Bullfrog Power, Atlantic Central will also be supporting the development of community-based green energy projects as Bullfrog uses its customers’ support to provide critical funding to these projects. For example, in Atlantic Canada, Bullfrog Power has helped fund rooftop solar projects on the Hope Blooms community greenhouse in Halifax, the Deanery Project education site near Ship Harbour, N.S., and the Knowlesville Art and Nature Centre in Knowlesville, N.B.—all of which educate youth on the benefits of renewable energy.

“Teachers Plus Credit Union has been a Bullfrog Power customer since 2013 and was the first credit union in Atlantic Canada to choose renewable energy with Bullfrog. Green power has enabled us to reduce our emissions footprint and help advance community green energy projects right here in Atlantic Canada,” says Steve Richard, President and CEO, Teachers Plus Credit Union. “I’m so pleased to see Atlantic Central join us in taking a leadership position on the environment.”

“We congratulate Atlantic Central on making the choice for green energy—it’s a decision that demonstrates a strong commitment to their communities and the environment,” says Ron Seftel, CEO, Bullfrog Power. “It’s hoped the decision will encourage like-minded organizations in Atlantic Canada to follow their lead, ultimately increasing the demand for renewable power in Eastern Canada.”

“East Coast Credit Union has been a proud Bullfrog Power customer since 2016, choosing green electricity for our 20 branches and 30 ATMs across Nova Scotia,” says Ken Shea, President and CEO, East Coast Credit Union. “Over the years, we have received positive feedback on our commitment to the environment through green energy—from customers, employees, partners and most recently from the Canadian Credit Union Association through their Social Responsibility Award.”
