1) How does the program work?
The Solar Water Heating Program allows you to receive substantial savings on the purchase and installation of your own solar water heater. Then, once the unit is installed, you can qualify to put even more money back into your pocket with Federal and Provincial Government incentives.

The solar water heaters are manufactured in Canada by EnerWorks and were the first solar water heaters to receive all-season CSA certification. Installation is done by certified installers who will professionally install each solar water heater quickly and efficiently.

This program is available in Ontario, primarily in the Enbridge Gas Distribution franchise area for a limited time and applies to a limited number of systems. In order to qualify for incentives, the solar water heater must be installed by the end of 2010.

2) Who is Bullfrog Power?
Bullfrog Power, Canada’s 100 per cent green electricity provider, offers homes and businesses a clean, renewable electricity choice. Bullfrog’s electricity comes exclusively from wind and hydro facilities that have been certified as low impact by Environment Canada under its EcoLogoM program instead of from polluting sources like coal, oil, natural gas, and nuclear. Thousands of Canadian homes and businesses are doing their part to address climate change and air pollution by switching to green electricity with Bullfrog Power.

3) Why is Bullfrog participating in the program?
Solar water heating is closely aligned with Bullfrog Power’s objectives, which include: providing Canadians energy choices that lead to a sustainable world for future generations; offering convenient ways to support locally generated renewable power; and bringing new renewable generation online in Canada.

Bullfrog’s goal is to provide Canadians with practical renewable energy choices. That’s why, together with Enbridge Gas Distribution and EnerWorks, we are participating in this new solar water heating program.

4) Why is Enbridge Gas Distribution participating in the program?
Enbridge Gas Distribution has a 160-year history and is Canada’s largest natural gas distribution company. Enbridge Gas Distribution is also a recognized leader in providing energy efficiency programs. While natural gas is generally the preferred option for residential water heating, there is growing consumer interest in using renewable energy, including solar thermal water heating. Enbridge Gas Distribution has an ongoing commitment to moving towards a green energy economy and is pleased to work with Bullfrog Power, EnerWorks and NRCan to facilitate a program that helps customers put their interest in solar thermal water heating into action.

5) Who is EnerWorks?
EnerWorks Inc. is a leading North American solar thermal technology provider. With proven, patented technology and certified systems, EnerWorks offers high quality, reliable and cost effective renewable energy solutions to the North American market.

EnerWorks develops and manufactures proprietary renewable energy appliances for residential, commercial and industrial markets. In the residential market, EnerWorks’s solar water heating appliances are fully certified, ENERGY STAR® qualified, and the first system to meet CSA international standards for all seasons. They complement existing water-heating systems and provide users with clean energy and a real reduction in energy costs. In the commercial and industrial markets, EnerWorks is at the forefront of integrated solar thermal solutions, working with local partners to design, install, commission and maintain solar thermal heating and cooling systems.

6) How does the solar water heater work?
The process is simple: the sun's energy is harnessed through solar collectors on your roof and transferred through an energy pack to your water storage tank, where it is available to provide hot water for washing, cooking and heating.

Solar heated water meets your household’s primary demand for hot water and provides significant annual energy savings, while your existing water heater provides a secondary heating source. Solar water heaters do not affect the quality of hot water produced nor its availability. They offer a long operational life, minimal maintenance and an affordable green energy alternative.

7) Why should I buy an EnerWorks solar water heater?
The EnerWorks solar water heater:

  • Reduces your ongoing annual water heating costs;
  • Offers cost competitive and environmentally friendly green energy;
  • Provides a practical and inexpensive way for home owners to support sustainable, pollution-free energy solutions;
  • Contributes to a healthier environment by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution; and
  • Is dependable—your solar water heater does not affect how you use your hot water and requires little maintenance.

8) When will I receive the rebates and incentives?
The grants and rebates will be awarded after your system has been purchased and installed. Your installer will provide you with information about each applicable grant and incentive and will assist you in claiming them.

9) How dependable is the solar water heater?
The EnerWorks solar water heater combines the dependability of conventional fuels (natural gas, electricity, oil, propane, etc.) with free energy from the sun. It has been developed and tested with the participation of Natural Resources Canada, Queen's University Solar Calorimetric Laboratory and leading component manufacturers. The appliance’s performance has been third-party verified at the National Solar Test Facility at Bodycote Material Testing in Mississauga, Canada. It requires minimal service and has an expected lifespan of more than 20 years. It is certified under Canadian Standards Association (CSA), Florida Solar Energy Centre (FSEC) and Solar Rating and Certification Corporation (SRCC) standards. EnerWorks solar water heaters were the first to qualify for the ENERGY STAR
® residential water heater program.

10) How can I purchase a solar water heater?

  • To arrange a free site evaluation at your convenience and determine if solar heating is right for you, call 1.866.775.8808 or click here to complete an inquiry form.
  • An EnerWorks-certified installer will visit your home, determine if solar water heating is right for you and identify the most appropriate installation location.

11) How is the solar water heater installed?
In three easy steps, you can have your own EnerWorks solar water heater professionally installed:

1. Determine if solar water heating is right for you.

2. Book the installation of your solar water heater.

  • EnerWorks-certified installers will professionally install your solar water heater quickly and efficiently.
  • If your home is eligible, the installers will also help you book an energy audit – the ecoENERGY Home Retrofit – that will qualify you for additional savings from government grant and rebate programs.

3. Start saving money and helping the environment.

  • After the installation of your EnerWorks solar water heater, you will immediately begin saving money on your water heating costs. By using renewable energy, you will also be reducing your environmental footprint.

12) How does the solar water heater handle the high summer temperatures and solar radiation?
If you are on vacation, or not using all of the solar energy from your solar collectors, your solar water heater is designed to avoid the problems associated with stagnation with no user intervention required. Here’s how it works:

  • Each collector has a patented temperature-limiting device that allows any excess heat to be released. This is done in a “passive”, mechanical way so that the device is not dependent on a power source; the vent works automatically even during a power outage.
  • EnerWorks collectors use a 50/50 mix of water and food-grade, freeze-protected fluid that can withstand high temperatures with minimal degradation.
  • Fluid change is recommended at least once every three years in moderate climates and should be checked more often in hot climates.

13) How does the solar water heater work in the winter?
The solar collectors continue to capture the sun’s energy, even in the winter. Shortened hours of daylight and a different angle of sunlight will affect how much energy is collected but you can still expect to meet up to 35% of your hot water needs with solar heated water during the winter months. And with your existing water heater serving as backup, you will never be without hot water.

14) Can I remove my existing water heater once I install a solar water heater?
No. The solar water heater works with your existing water heater to ensure that you have a reliable, consistent supply of hot water.

15) What happens if I redo my roof?
The solar collectors and railings can be removed to facilitate re-shingling. Your certified installer can assist you with this process and provide you with a quote for the overall cost.

16) Will EnerWorks solar water heater work if I have a tankless water heater?
If you currently have a tankless water heater, it is recommended you check with the manufacturer to determine if it will work with the solar water heating system.
