The City of Toronto wants living green to become a way of life. That's why it's leading by example and taking big, bold steps to reduce its environmental impact.
The City of Toronto has bullfrogpowered City Hall as an important first step toward its target of obtaining 25 per cent of its electricity needs from renewable sources. The City's green power purchase also supports its ambitious goal of achieving an 80% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
Sourcing green power is another important commitment in a series of initiatives aimed at reducing the environmental impact of Toronto's buildings, including:
- Deep Lake Water Cooling technology for its buildings;
- an Energy Retrofit program to reduce energy consumption of City buildings by 15%;
- solar wall installations to assist in heating buildings; and
- the creation of green spaces on top of human-made structures.
The Energy and Waste Management Office (EWMO) is the City of Toronto's centre of expertise for internal energy conservation and waste management programs. The EWMO works with City Agencies, Boards, Commissions and Divisions to help them meet Council's energy reduction and waste diversion goals.
Through its Live Green Toronto program, the City also encourages every resident of Toronto to take action in their homes and neighbourhoods.
