The Pay More for Energy campaign has come to a close.

In the spring of 2009, Bullfrog Power, Canada's 100% green electricity provider, ran a campaign across Canada with the deliberately provocative slogan, Pay More for Energy.

The purpose of the campaign was twofold.

We wanted to educate Canadians about the benefits of renewable energy and why it makes sense to pay more for green power. In Canada, our electricity comes from a range of sources, including coal, oil and gas, nuclear and large hydro. Only a tiny fraction comes from emissions-free sources like wind power and low-impact hydro. Yet these renewable sources are clean and sustainable—and an important part of the solution to air pollution, climate change and their associated health and economic costs.

We also wanted to provoke a discussion in households across Canada about the real cost of conventional electricity. Conventional energy is artificially cheap, both as a result of subsidies, and also because the environmental, health and ultimately economic costs it imposes on society are not reflected in its current price. During the campaign, people from across Canada took time to visit the paymoreforenergy.ca site to learn more about green energy and upload their comments and videos on why paying more for energy is important to them. Leading environmental groups contributed video interviews explaining the importance of renewable energy. The campaign also made a significant mark in the public domain, receiving coverage from many prominent media outlets.
