New Wind Power Projects

Since Bullfrog launched in 2005, Bullfrogpowered homes and businesses have provided the demand for several new wind projects in Canada.

There are three different types of EcoLogo power, known as Type I, Type II and Type III. The distinction between types is based on age of the facilities. Low-impact renewable generation facilities built prior to 1990 are eligible to be certified as Type I. Facilities commissioned between 1991 and 2001 are eligible to be certified as Type II, and facilities commissioned after 2001 are eligible to be certified as Type III. The criteria for EcoLogo certification are available here. Bullfrog Power provides the highest quality green power available to homes and businesses, which means that we look for new local or regional low-impact power.

The following new Type III wind power projects provide green electricity to meet the growing demand of Bullfrog Power customers.

Ferndale Wind Farm

Ferndale Wind Farm – Ferndale, Ontario

Bullfrog Power announced an initial agreement with Sky Generation in September 2005 for a 20-year power purchase agreement from the wind farm’s initial turbine and a minority investment in Sky Generation to help finance new turbines. In November 2006, Bullfrog Power announced the commissioning of two new wind turbines at the Sky Generation wind farm in Ferndale on the Bruce Peninsula to exclusively supply Bullfrog Power customers. Together, the two state-of-the-art Vestas V82 1.65 MW turbines are expected to produce almost 9 million kWh of emission-free electricity each year.

“By exercising their choice for green electricity for their homes, businesses and events, Bullfrog Power customers have directly enabled the development of these new wind turbines,” said wind power pioneer and CEO of Sky Generation, Glen Estill. “The partnership between Sky Generation and Bullfrog Power is playing a critical part in advancing the role of renewables in Ontario’s electricity mix, as well as helping to clean up our local air quality and address global climate change.”

Schneider Power turbines

Schneider Power turbines – Manitoulin Island, Ontario

In February 2007, Bullfrog Power partnered with Schneider Power to commission two new wind turbines near Spring Bay on Manitoulin Island. Together, the Enercon E48 800kw turbines produce approximately 3 million kWh of clean, emissions-free power annually. Through a 20-year power purchase agreement between Schneider Power and Bullfrog, all of the power produced by the new turbines will be supplied to the Ontario grid on behalf of Bullfrog’s customers.

“Bullfrog Power is building the market conditions necessary to enable renewable power generators like Schneider Power to build and commission new wind power projects,” said Thomas Schneider, CEO, Schneider Power Inc. “We’re excited to bring more clean, emission-free power to Ontario customers as a result of our partnership with Bullfrog Power.”

Oldman River Wind Farm

Oldman River Wind Farm – Pincher Creek, Alberta

In June 2007, Bullfrog Power announced that it will source all of the power from two wind turbines newly commissioned at the Oldman River Wind Farm near Pincher Creek by Bullfrog supplier Alberta Wind Energy Corporation. Additionally, in keeping with its commitment to bring new renewable power online, Bullfrog has invested in Alberta Wind Energy to help expand the project in the future.

“Choosing green power from Bullfrog is an important way to increase the viability of new wind projects in Alberta,” said Douglas Amy, Director, Alberta Wind Energy Corporation. “We are pleased to work with Bullfrog Power with these first two turbines and hope to work further together in the future.”

Ravenswood Wind Farm

Ravenswood Wind Farm – Ravenswood, Ontario

Construction of six new turbines at Sky Generation's new wind farm site in Ravenswood, near Grand Bend, Ontario, was completed in late 2007 and on January 23, 2008, the new turbines were commissioned in a community celebration that drew hundreds of supporters. The site will produce more than 26 million kilowatt hours of clean, emissions-free power annually. Bullfrog will source a portion of the power from the new site.

"By educating homeowners and businesses on the benefits of switching to green power, Bullfrog is helping to create the market conditions generators depend upon to make the advancement of renewables a reality in Canada," said Glen Estill, principal of Sky Generation. "We’re pleased to be working together with Bullfrog to bring new wind power online in Ontario." Bullfrog president, Tom Heintzman climbed one of the new turbines in a special interview with The Weather Network. View the video coverage here.

Bear Mountain Wind Park

Bear Mountain Wind Park – Dawson Creek, British Columbia

In October 2009, AltaGas’ Bear Mountain Wind Park was commissioned and connected to the British Columbia electricity grid, making it the first project in B.C. to deliver wind power to the regional grid. The EcoLogoM-certified facility supplies members of the bullfrogpowered community with 100 per cent locally produced wind power, and Bullfrog Power is the only company that provides British Columbians with a 100 per cent clean, local wind power choice. Bear Mountain Wind Park is located in the Peace River region, 15 kilometres southwest of Dawson Creek.

“We’re thrilled that the Bear Mountain Wind Park is now supplying B.C., giving our customers a 100 per cent local wind choice,” said Tom Heintzman, President, Bullfrog Power. “By signing on with Bullfrog, homes and businesses in B.C. are setting an example for friends, neighbours, business leaders and policy makers, and sending a powerful message that new renewable energy is important to our environment and our economy.”
