What is Bullfrog’s vision?
Our vision is a future powered by renewable energy. Our mission is to provide Canadians with easy and practical 100% renewable energy solutions for their homes, businesses, and transportation.
Why are clean energy choices important?
Bullfrog’s mission is founded on a belief that consumers have a unique power to change the world, and that it is important to make clean energy choices available so that consumers can exert their influence.
When clean energy choices are available, many good things happen. Individuals have the opportunity to take action and reduce their own environmental footprint. As more and more people choose renewable energy, green power solutions become increasingly affordable both as a result of the technology being improved and through economies of scale. And, collectively, our demand helps to increase the amount of renewable power being generated and injected onto the grid.
In addition, when thousands of people take a stand for renewable power, they create an inspiring example for the rest of the community. They also send a powerful message to industry and government about the importance of renewable energy, and thereby initiate and enable political change. Having multiple energy choices available stimulates discussion, education and ultimately conservation and wiser energy management.
What is Bullfrog doing?
To achieve our vision, we provide a 100% renewable electricity choice to everyone in BC, Alberta, Ontario and the Maritimes. In the future we hope to offer this choice to all Canadians.
We are raising the standards for green electricity in Canada. We do this by working to improve existing standards (such as EcoLogo) and by voluntarily meeting even higher standards. For instance, we make publicly available audits of our product offerings by a nationally recognized accounting firm to confirm that as much green electricity has been injected onto the electricity grid as our consumers have purchased, and we publish our emission reductions data and methodology.
We partner with leading Canadian environmental non-profits on efforts that promote sustainability.
We are a double-bottom line organization that has pledged to donate 10% of profits to organizations that support environmental sustainability. The founders have also pledged 10% of the founding equity to organizations that promote sustainability.
We are active in the electrification of transportation using renewable electricity. It is important that electric vehicles, as they become more common, run on renewable electricity in order to ensure that the pollution does not move from the vehicle’s tailpipe to a polluting electricity generation facility. The Bullfrog car, which is a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) bullfrogpowered with renewable electricity, was one of the ten PHEVs in the original study by the Toronto Atmospheric Fund. We’re now involved in the expansion of this program, which aims to include 300 vehicles. In addition, Bullfrog Power offers renewable electricity to owners of electric transportation, and a number of electric cars, scooters and bicycles are now bullfrogpowered.
More recently, however, our vision for Bullfrog has expanded to providing renewable energy solutions that go beyond our traditional electricity offering and into other forms of green energy.
With industry leading partners, we have begun providing solar-thermal hot water systems in parts of Ontario. Solar-thermal systems harness the sun’s energy to heat water. In the future, we hope to offer this choice more broadly in Canada.
We are also exploring ways to help make onsite renewable energy, such as solar photovoltaic generation, more accessible to the Canadian residential and corporate marketplace. In contrast to solar thermal, solar photovoltaic systems convert the sun’s energy into electricity.
In addition, we are looking into ways to make clean natural gas available to Canadians. One exciting way to do this is to capture the gas that is naturally produced when organic material decays, for example in landfills, and that would otherwise escape into the atmosphere.
As always, we continue to advocate for conservation and energy efficiency, for which new forms of renewable energy are no substitute. Even with conservation and renewable energy, there are times currently when fossil fuel is an unavoidable choice, for instance for necessary car or air travel. A sister company, less.ca, offers Canada’s highest quality carbon offsets. Less recently received the highest ranking in a report by the Pembina Institute and the David Suzuki Foundation.1
How can you help?
If you share a vision of a clean energy future, there is a lot you can do to help make it a reality. Think about how energy is used in your life. Take steps to reduce your energy use and become more energy efficient. Switch to buying clean energy where you can and support organizations that are doing the same. Get involved with organizations that are promoting more sustainable energy policy and add your voice to those calling for change.
