Green electricity is an unusual product. You can’t touch, taste, see, hear or smell it. As a result, green electricity products may seem difficult to evaluate. How can you, as a customer, be sure that green energy is genuinely being generated on your behalf? What measures are in place to ensure that the electricity is injected onto the grid? And is there any risk that the environmental benefits (such as carbon emission reductions) are being “double-counted”, i.e., that someone else is taking credit for that green electricity?
Your safeguard is a green electricity audit. Green energy products are based on a legally binding contract under which a provider is obligated to retire green energy attributes on behalf of its customers. An audit is the only proof customers have that their green energy provider meets these commitments.
