Bullfrog Power® launches Green Power Challenge
Partners in Project Green and Bullfrog Power challenge Pearson Eco-Business Zone to green 58,000 MWh of electricity
Toronto, April 14, 2010 — Bullfrog Power, Canada’s 100 per cent green electricity provider, and Partners in Project Green, an initiative led by the Greater Toronto Airports Authority and Toronto and Region Conservation, today launched the Green Power Challenge, encouraging businesses in the Pearson Eco-Business Zone to achieve a collective goal of greening 58,000 MWh of electricity. Many leading organizations within the Pearson Eco-Business Zone have already made the decision to support electricity with Bullfrog Power, including Walmart Canada, LoyaltyOne, Symcor Inc., BMO Financial Group, RBC Financial Group, TD Bank Financial Group and GWL Realty.
Together, these organizations have greened more than 17,000 MWh of electricity—30 per cent of the Green Power Challenge goal. Through the Challenge, other local businesses in the area are now encouraged to join them in taking action on the environment. By signing on for green electricity with Bullfrog Power, organizations will not only reduce their environmental impact and help meet Challenge objectives, but they will also support the development of new wind power in the province and help demonstrate to the international community that Toronto’s private sector is working together to address climate change and air pollution.
As demonstrated by the variety of businesses already signed on for green electricity with Bullfrog Power, any organization within the Pearson Eco-Business Zone—regardless of its size, industry or sector—can participate in the Challenge. Walmart Canada’s home office and Mississauga Supercentre are contributing to the goal, as are Symcor’s printing facilities, LoyaltyOne’s AIR MILES call centre, and the manufacturing facilities, leased office spaces and common areas of several other businesses.
“Bullfrog Power is pleased to be working with Partners in Project Green to take its sustainability program to next level with the Green Power Challenge,” said Tom Heintzman, President, Bullfrog Power. “Together, these GTA businesses are not only reducing their electricity-related environmental footprint, but they are also supporting the development of renewable power in the province and ultimately helping to create a greener tomorrow for our communities.”
Bullfrog Power uses the collective demand of its customers to cause new renewable facilities to be built. Several new wind turbines have been commissioned in the country as a result of the support of bullfrogpowered homes and businesses.
“The Green Power Challenge unites businesses to work together for the common goal of a cleaner, greener community,” said Brian Denney, Chief Administrative Officer, Toronto and Region Conservation. “We’re delighted to partner with Bullfrog Power to help the Pearson Eco-Business Zone reach its ultimate goal of sourcing 10 per cent of electricity from renewable generation by 2015.”
The Green Power Challenge is the latest initiative to be launched by Partners in Project Green. Last year, 2,525 companies located in the Pearson Eco-Business Zone —including industry leaders in logistics, food processing, automotive, plastic and pharmaceuticals—participated in Partners in Project Green programs and together achieved significant results in the areas of energy management, water conservation and facility retrofits. Through Partners in Project Green programs, organizations with the Pearson Eco-Business Zone saved a combined total of 5.4 megawatts of electricity and 3,626,455 m3 of natural gas.
