Toronto’s City Hall is bullfrogpoweredTM

City takes first big jump toward green energy target

Share news from Bullfrog Power

Toronto, April 21, 2009 — Bullfrog Power™, Canada’s leading 100 per cent green electricity provider, is pleased to announce that the City of Toronto has chosen to “bullfrogpower” City Hall and Nathan Phillips Square. This green power purchase is the first step toward reaching the city’s goal of meeting its electricity requirements with renewable power, as recommended in the city’s “Climate Change, Clean Air, and Sustainable Energy Action Plan: Moving from Framework to Action” in June 2007.

Bullfrog’s power is sourced exclusively from Ontario-based wind and hydro facilities that have been certified as low impact under Environment Canada’s EcoLogoM program. Toronto is purchasing 19,000 megawatt hours (MWh) of clean, emissions-free power from Bullfrog, which will reduce the city’s CO2 footprint by more than 4,000 tonnes in 2009, helping to support the city’s target for a six per cent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2012.

“In Toronto, we take great pride in our environmental leadership. The decision to purchase Bullfrog Power’s locally sourced green electricity is a natural fit for the city to address climate change and air pollution. It also helps accelerate Ontario’s progress toward becoming a diversified, green economy and renewable power leader,” said City of Toronto Mayor David Miller. “By committing to buy the highest quality green electricity available for City Hall and Nathan Phillips Square from Bullfrog, the city helps to grow the green power market and causes new renewable power to be built.”

“Bullfrog will continue to source and invest in new wind power projects in Ontario as demand for green power increases,” said Tom Heintzman, President of Bullfrog Power. “By purchasing green power for City Hall and Nathan Phillips Square, Toronto is setting an example for city residents and businesses alike and reinforcing Toronto’s position as a global environmental leader.”

Several new wind generation projects have already been built and commissioned as a direct result of the demand from Bullfrog Power customers like the City of Toronto.

Through its Live Green Toronto program, the city also encourages every resident of Toronto to take action in their homes and neighbourhoods.
