Bullfrog Power partners with OCAD
to reduce carbon emissions footprint
Ontario College of Art & Design Student Centre is bullfrogpowered™
Toronto, April 11, 2008 — Bullfrog Power™, a leading Canadian provider of 100
per cent green electricity, today announced that the Ontario College of Art & Design (OCAD) has agreed to purchase clean, renewable electricity for its Student Centre.
“Last month, OCAD began to measure our carbon footprint and track it over time. Now, together with Bullfrog, we're taking action to reduce that footprint,” said Peter Caldwell, OCAD Vice-President, Finance and Administration. “Supplying our Student Centre with renewable energy is the latest step in making our university a leader not just in teaching sustainability, but in practising it.”
“OCAD is demonstrating through a variety of initiatives that they are ready to take action to create a more sustainable, environmentally friendly campus,” said Tom Heintzman, President, Bullfrog Power. “We’re proud to be a part of their plan by helping to reduce the school’s electricity-related emissions footprint.”
Switching to Bullfrog Power will reduce the CO2, NOx and SOx emissions associated with the OCAD Student Centre’s electricity use, which will help to combat climate change and tackle the more immediate and local issue of Ontario smog. By bullfrogpowering the Student Centre, OCAD will reduce its one-year emissions footprint by approximately 24.2 tonnes of CO2 (the primary gas that causes climate change), 71.6 kilograms of SO2 (major contributor to smog) and 30.9 Kg of NO (major contributor to smog).
OCAD, a member of the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE), is committed to advancing responsible environmental practises and promoting sustainability both through research and programs. The university recently shut off power for its entire campus in support of Earth Hour.
The OCAD Sustainability Task Force has bullfrogpowered the Student Centre as part of its plan to develop innovative solutions to reduce waste, improve recycling and lower carbon emissions. Other environmental initiatives include:
- a “Green Exchange” event held earlier this year in which community members brought in old electronic equipment and batteries for exchange, recycling or proper disposal;
- switching to a new vegetable/coconut oil-based solvent to replace the use of toxic solvents in all OCAD studios;
- a rigorous campus recycling program that includes recycling broken furniture and scrap studio materials such as metal and plastics;
- trial use of biodegradable garbage bags, recyclable hand towels and green cleaning products;
- a “no bottled water” policy for student orientation activities;
- a bicycle-friendly campus program; and
- upgrades to heating/cooling systems to improve energy efficiency.
